Royalty, culture and chivalry – this is Rajasthan- a land of colours, joy and friendliness. Everything about Rajasthan is fascinating from miles of golden stretches of sand to the kaleidoscope of magnificent forts, opulent palaces and marvellous havelis; each a splendid architectural creation having a legend of its own. The cities of Rajasthan still retain the medieval touch which can be experienced in the rich arts and crafts, vibrant people and multi-hued customs.
Ajmer is the geographical centre of the exhilarating state of Rajasthan. This holy city has been witness to an interesting past. The city was founded by Raja Ajay Pal Chauhan in 7th Century A.D. Since then Ajmer became home to many dynasties which left behind indelible marks on its culture and tradition.
Ajmer presents an amalgamation of various cultures and blend of many religions. The land comes alive with exuberant folk dance and music, ballads and spectacular festivities that are an inseparable part of its culture. The city has in its closest proximity, the holy land of Pushkar, the abode of Lord Brahama. Pushkar is studded with many beautiful temples dating back a few centuries. It is a popular pilgrim spot. The city is also renowned for ‘Dargah Sharif’, the tomb of Sufi Saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti. The Dargah is an example of secular traditions of the city, as it is visited by people from all the religions.
The flamboyant blend of the Mughal and Rajput art comes alive with the Kishangarh School of painting, best recognized by Bani Thani painting. The Kishangarh School of painting originated from a small town called Kishangarh, which lies in close proximity to Ajmer. This town is also known for trading of good quality marble and it is the largest mandi of marble in Asia.
